In fact, the queue just to get in snaked all the way into the borough of Kensington!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The main exhibition floor was packed to the rafters with the best HR and learning technology on the market, and this included a<a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/gr\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> team from Cezanne HR<\/a>. Our team of HR software product experts spent the day demonstrating the Cezanne HR system in all its glory, and taking in the sights and sounds of this ever-popular event.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-76930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Cezanne-HR-at-the-Festival-of-Work-2023.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cezanne HR at the Festival of Work 2023\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Cezanne-HR-at-the-Festival-of-Work-2023.jpg?w=766&amp;ssl=1 766w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Cezanne-HR-at-the-Festival-of-Work-2023.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This year saw a big shake up in how talks and seminars were delivered. Along with the usual throng of light and bright supplier stands, this year, the main exhibition floor was dominated by a huge festival stage, where many insightful talks and seminars took place throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the biggest draw, though, was the opening keynote speech with television presenter Fearne Cotton. Her talk, in which she spoke candidly about the importance of self-care and setting boundaries, was made in front of a huge audience.<\/p>\n<p>She discussed her own personal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/women\/fearne-cotton-emotional-independence-b2234253.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">battles with anxiety<\/a>, and spoke with some passion about how we all shouldn\u2019t fear mistakes or challenging times. This is because <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2022\/10\/ted-talks-on-building-resilience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">building personal resilience<\/a> will always be the bi-product of difficult times, and can ultimately help make us all stronger.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-76935 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Ferne-Cotton-at-the-Festival-of-Work-2023.jpg?resize=660%2C494&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Fearne cotton at the festival of work 2023\" width=\"660\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Ferne-Cotton-at-the-Festival-of-Work-2023.jpg?w=801&amp;ssl=1 801w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Ferne-Cotton-at-the-Festival-of-Work-2023.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Ferne-Cotton-at-the-Festival-of-Work-2023.jpg?resize=768%2C575&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She closed her talk by saying that, in her opinion, a good life is a challenging one. In addition, she believes that a huge part of healthy wellbeing is taking time out to be selective of things that make you happy, and not being too hard or critical of yourself. Wise words indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Her opening keynote certainly gave everyone food for thought. However, her talk was just one of many going on throughout the day \u2013 and there was one in particular that piqued my own interest\u2026<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Trends and solutions: a data-led approach to supporting employees through a cost-of-living crisis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Taking place on the first floor of the exhibition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/vicky-mcnab-67670923\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vicky McNab<\/a>, Product Director at data analytics and consumer credit reporting company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experian.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experian<\/a>, delivered an insightful talk on how data can be used to better support employees during the cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-76940 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/How-to-support-employees-during-the-cost-of-living-crisis-festival-of-work-2023-Cezanne-HR.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Developing effective Financial wellbeing strategies - festival of work 2023 Cezanne HR\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/How-to-support-employees-during-the-cost-of-living-crisis-festival-of-work-2023-Cezanne-HR.jpg?w=805&amp;ssl=1 805w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/How-to-support-employees-during-the-cost-of-living-crisis-festival-of-work-2023-Cezanne-HR.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/How-to-support-employees-during-the-cost-of-living-crisis-festival-of-work-2023-Cezanne-HR.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She opened her talk by stating that businesses will &#8211; whether they mean to or not &#8211; actively affect their employees\u2019 household finances, and there\u2019s a few reasons why.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, employers will affect their employees\u2019 finances through what benefits they\u2019re offered, their wages, where they complete their duties or even their standard working hours. Secondly, it\u2019s also the case that over the past 3-4 years, the employer-employee relationship has significantly changed. Employees are looking to employers to help them navigate tough financial conditions, and this isn\u2019t just in the form of being paid more.<\/p>\n<p>Thirdly, <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2022\/06\/diversity-inclusion-pulse-survey-questions-ask-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased diversity across the workforce<\/a> will also be a factor. This is because everyone has different aspirations and different needs, meaning not all renumeration packages or business perks will suit everyone.<\/p>\n<p>With those factors at play, it\u2019s now become increasingly difficult for employers to make intelligent decisions when it comes to building successful wellbeing strategies.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why employers can\u2019t afford to ignore the financial wellbeing of employees<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Vicky went onto say that, although wellbeing strategies are not often considered urgent business priorities, the current financial crisis should put financial wellbeing top of HR\u2019s agenda \u2013 and with good reason. This is because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Three quarters of people have cut back their spending, and it\u2019s not just those on lower incomes \u2013 in fact, it\u2019s primarily middle earners<\/li>\n<li>44% of people have used savings to make ends meet<\/li>\n<li>49% of people couldn\u2019t afford to make an emergency payment of more than \u00a3300, such as needing a plumber or fixing a broken down car<\/li>\n<li>26% of people have used credit just to fund normal monthly payments, and this is apparently increasing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, Vicky revealed that data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equifax.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equifax<\/a> showed there were over a million more credit cards with a balance on them compared to a year ago. But, despite many people now experiencing financial concerns or hardship (and the data proving this), Experian\u2019s research also discovered that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>52% of UK adults don\u2019t feel comfortable talking about money<\/li>\n<li>30% of UK adults have low knowledge of financial matters<\/li>\n<li>39% of UK employees are experiencing higher levels of anxiety about finances since the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although a person\u2019s financial circumstances are \u2013 understandably \u2013 private matters, all these factors will, in turn, present <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2022\/11\/challenges-facing-managers-during-financial-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenges to how recruiters and employers engage with employees<\/a> \u2013 and Vicky believes organisations must be prepared.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Creating effective financial wellbeing strategies: diagnosis is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With many in the UK battling extraordinary financial conditions, Vicky stated it was in every organisation\u2019s interest to have robust wellbeing strategies in place for their staff. But, these can be incredibly expensive, both from a time and monetary perspective. So, it\u2019s vital that employers look to get them \u2018right first time\u2019 to ensure they are valued and engaged with by employees.<\/p>\n<p>To create an effective financial wellbeing strategy, Vicky recommends employers and their HR teams focus on diagnosis. In other words, what \u2013 in the wider world and within your organisation \u2013 lies ahead for employees and their finances that could impact your business? Vicky recommended asking these 5 questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What\u2019s the complete picture?<\/strong> Try to get a better understanding of the overall financial picture for your employees, and the factors that can affect their day-to-day lives<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do we understand how macroeconomics could impact employees? <\/strong>How is the economy of the UK doing, and what are the best forecasts predicting for the immediate future and longer term?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Are there any regional considerations?<\/strong> Are their regional financial trends \u2013 for example, \u2018London prices\u2019 \u2013 that could have an impact on employee financial wellbeing?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Are there any organisational trends<\/strong>? Are there any contributing factors within your business that could impact your employees\u2019 financial wellbeing? For example, if your business found the biggest expenses for employees outside of normal household bills were travel costs, would that dictate your financial wellbeing strategy?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do we have any cohort-level insights?<\/strong> Do specific groups of employees feel financial impacts more readily?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vicky stated that answering these 5 questions is key to detecting whether employees could be under pressure financially. The answers will then, in turn, help support more effective \u2013 and preventative \u2013 financial wellbeing strategies.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How best to engage with employees when it comes to financial wellbeing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Vicky closed her talk by stating that, although there are green shoots of recovery, the cost-of-living crisis is not going to disappear overnight.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s going to be affecting all of us for years to come as certain impacts won\u2019t be felt now. For example, fixed mortgage deals coming to an end in 18-24 months\u2019 time will likely be impacted by much higher interest rates than today, and this could lead to a secondary economic shock. This is why it\u2019s vital employers get their houses in order when it comes to their financial wellbeing strategies.<\/p>\n<p>However, Vicky stressed that employers can\u2019t veer into offering financial advice. They do, though, have <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2021\/12\/financial-wellbeing-money-worries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a duty of care to their employees<\/a>. So, as part of any wider strategy, employers could look to provide guidance on how to better understand <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/gr\/hr-blog\/2023\/05\/4-things-hr-needs-from-a-managed-payroll-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">payslips<\/a> \u2013 a common financial touchpoint for employees &#8211; or look to providing tools and resources to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/francesbridges\/2018\/06\/27\/the-best-tools-to-learn-how-to-manage-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improve financial literacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Vicky added that from an HR perspective, meaningful engagement around financial wellbeing can be nurtured <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2020\/10\/10-things-hr-portal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">through HR portals<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/gr\/hr-portals-and-workspaces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shared workspaces<\/a>. This is because learning resources and communications can be easily shared across a business, and made easily accessible by everyone, too.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Vicky believes that employee pulse surveys are something that shouldn\u2019t be forgotten. Pulse surveys are incredibly quick, easy and timely methods of collecting the vital employee data that will help guide more strategic decision making.
