It underscores how organisations (especially large ones) need very precise policies + shared understanding internally around what employees can \/ should say publicly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"935\"><strong data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"933\">Lessons for HR<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-start=\"939\" data-end=\"975\"><strong data-start=\"939\" data-end=\"973\">Clarity in social media policy: <\/strong>Make sure policy is written clearly so employees understand expectations around impartiality, free speech etc.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1169\"><strong data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1167\">Inclusivity in policy scope: <\/strong>Include everyone (staff, freelancers, senior leadership, etc.). One-size-fits-all avoids confusion and perceptions of unfair treatment.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1355\" data-end=\"1384\"><strong data-start=\"1355\" data-end=\"1382\">Accessibility of policy: <\/strong>Don\u2019t bury it. Use shared online tools, HR portals. Keep policy visible at all times, signed copies kept, updates communicated.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1562\" data-end=\"1616\"><strong data-start=\"1562\" data-end=\"1614\">Align the policy with company culture and values: <\/strong>If your values are, say, respect, openness, integrity etc., embed them in social media guidelines. Makes them feel less like rules imposed from above, more like norms people buy into.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>As an avid football fan, the fallout created by a Twitter post from Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker was incredible to watch.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Following his tweet, which detailed his thoughts on the Government\u2019s asylum policies, he was asked to \u2018step back\u2019 from presenting Match of the Day because the BBC believed his tweet broke their impartiality guidelines, and was thus in breach of his contract. His enforced break from presenting was also met with derision from co-presenters and commentators across the BBC; with many of them showing support for the presenter by refusing to take part in scheduled programming. This of course, threw the BBC\u2019s sporting schedules into total disarray, and also led to many journalists and observers saying that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2023\/mar\/11\/bbc-has-undermined-its-credibility-with-lineker-move-says-greg-dyke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC\u2019s own credibility<\/a> was seriously undermined.<\/p>\n<p>The entire drama has now seemingly been resolved \u2013 great news for us football fans. But, did it ever had to happen in the first place, and are there any lessons HR can learn from this debacle?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A breakdown of communication<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s hardly surprising that large organisations are anxious about their employees being active on social media. In fact, there are many businesses who <a href=\"https:\/\/everyonesocial.com\/blog\/employee-participation-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">actively discourage their staff\u2019s use of networking sites<\/a>, rather than encouraging them to actively embrace the on-line world. The Lineker vs. BBC situation highlights exactly why employers can be incredibly anxious with their employers being vocal on social \u2013 especially if it\u2019s obvious who they work for!<\/p>\n<p>Now, of course we don\u2019t know the intricacies of Lineker\u2019s employment contract with the BBC; but what we can say \u2013 with some confidence \u2013 is that this situation likely came about due to a difference of understanding when it comes to the BBC\u2019s social media policies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/l\/hr-under-pressure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-89268 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Download-our-exclusive-report-HR-Under-Pressure-here.png?resize=660%2C159&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Download our exclusive report into burnout in HR Under Pressure here\" width=\"660\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Download-our-exclusive-report-HR-Under-Pressure-here.png?w=1248&amp;ssl=1 1248w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Download-our-exclusive-report-HR-Under-Pressure-here.png?resize=300%2C72&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Download-our-exclusive-report-HR-Under-Pressure-here.png?resize=1024%2C246&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Download-our-exclusive-report-HR-Under-Pressure-here.png?resize=768%2C185&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The BBC felt Lineker\u2019s comments could be interpreted as inflammatory, and went against their core remit on remaining impartial \u2013 especially when it comes to the actions of the British Government. Lineker, on the other hand, didn\u2019t see a problem and believed he had a right to free speech, with many of his colleagues believing the same.<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s impossible to say for certain, it\u2019s highly likely the disagreement stemmed from whether or not the BBC made their <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2011\/12\/are-you-scared-of-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">policies on social media use<\/a> clear, obvious, and consistent across the corporation. It would certainly account for the difference of opinion between the two sides\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, this situation is something every HR professional can certainly learn from\u2026<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Clarity is key for effective social media policies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2011\/06\/managing-social-media-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social media<\/a> may not be popular with everyone, but there\u2019s no denying that \u2013 in whatever shape or form \u2013 it isn\u2019t going to disappear any time soon. This means employers and their HR teams are better off <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2012\/02\/using-social-media-for-hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engaging with it pro-actively<\/a>, rather than trying to discourage their employees from being active on social platforms. This is where having a clear, accessible and consistent social media policy comes into play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some tips for you to consider\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>Make your social media policy inclusive of the entire business<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>HR policies &#8211; including social media policies &#8211; can only ever be truly effective if they are inclusive of the entire business \u2013 including your freelancers. The last thing you want to create is a social media policy that says one thing is fine for one group of employees, but not for another \u2013 this will likely create division and confusion.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid this from happening, ensure your company\u2019s social media policy includes everyone&#8217;s perspective and addresses a wide range of concerns, including those of your organisation\u2019s senior leadership, HR, legal, marketing, and IT departments. If you involve your employees in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2017\/03\/3-hr-policies-can-protect-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">putting your HR policies together<\/a>\u00a0in the first place, they\u2019re much more likely to adhere to its core principles.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>Make it accessible for the entire business<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your social media policy is there to protect both your employees and your business, don\u2019t just keep it stored deep on a shared drive, or only sent as a document for new starters. Ensure it\u2019s accessible by anyone in the business, at any time. In addition, ensured signed copies by your employees are also safely stored there, too.<\/p>\n<p>This is where a shared online workspace can be a real asset. Shared workspaces or HR portals \u2013 such as Cezanne&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/gr\/hr-portals-and-workspaces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">integrated portals and workspaces<\/a> \u2013 make it easy for employees to access and view important company documents anytime, anyplace. In addition, any changes made to your policies can be quickly communicated, whilst it can also act as the \u2018one true voice\u2019 for your key policies \u2013 ensuring there\u2019s no confusion as to accuracy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>Tie them into your own company cultures and values<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See the chance to <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2013\/02\/why-hr-should-get-social-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enhance engagement<\/a> within your business by aligning your social media policy to the visions and values of your business. For example, if a core value of your business is to be respectful to others, then this can be reflected within your social media policy &#8211; encouraging your people to think carefully about what information they put out in the public domain.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that HR should be at the forefront of <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2022\/09\/ways-your-hr-system-help-support-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">developing and monitoring company cultures<\/a>. A clearly set out vision and values will help in this respect and, when supported correctly, will permeate throughout a business.
