After all, those are all key qualities HR professionals need to be successful in their roles. But, would your employees immediately associate being \u2018kind\u2019 with HR? Probably not!<\/h3>\n<p>That\u2019s because HR isn\u2019t exactly famed for showing kindness. HR is often the department that must deal with difficult situations within the workplace: be it resolving staff disputes or managing poor performance. As a result, HR has always had to battle something of <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2022\/08\/how-hr-can-improve-its-image\/\">an unfair image problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72679 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Why-HR-should-be-advocates-of-random-acts-of-kindness%400.5x.png?resize=624%2C351&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Hr advocate kindness\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Why-HR-should-be-advocates-of-random-acts-of-kindness%400.5x.png?w=624&amp;ssl=1 624w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Why-HR-should-be-advocates-of-random-acts-of-kindness%400.5x.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cezannehr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Why-HR-should-be-advocates-of-random-acts-of-kindness%400.5x.png?resize=208%2C117&amp;ssl=1 208w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, as we all know, HR is often at the centre of all the good things that happen within an organisation: from cultivating positive workplace cultures, to helping support employee health and wellbeing. So, wouldn\u2019t it make sense for them to also be advocates of kindness?<\/p>\n<h3>Why HR need to be advocates of random acts of kindness<\/h3>\n<p>If instilling a sense of kindness in your organisation hasn\u2019t been on your list of HR priorities, this February\u2019s Random Acts of Kindness week &#8211; which takes place here in the UK between the 14<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> February, culminating in Random Acts of Kindness Day on\u00a0the 17<sup>th <\/sup>of February \u2013 is the ideal time to start.<\/p>\n<p>Started by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.randomactsofkindness.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Random Acts of Kindness Foundation<\/a>, the event is designed to inspire people to pay forward simple acts of kindness. It\u2019s a fantastic way to unite employees, whilst also encouraging individuals and businesses to give something to others randomly \u2013 all without expecting anything in return.<\/p>\n<p>Given that we\u2019re living through a stalling economy and deepening cost-of-living crisis, highlighting the importance of kindness should be a priority for employers. Of course, when your business is <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2021\/07\/supporting-staff-under-pressure\/\">under pressure<\/a> and your employees are dealing with heavy workloads, actively performing acts of kindness can be easily forgotten. This, however, would be a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because committing good deeds, or random acts of kindness, have been proven to support positive mental health. For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologyib.com\/uploads\/1\/1\/7\/5\/11758934\/ib_psychology_-_anxiety_disorders.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">researchers at the University of British Columbia<\/a>\u00a0found that when people with anxiety carried out acts of kindness for others, it helped to reduce their own anxiety and improve relationships with others, too.<\/p>\n<p>With virtually every business looking for ways to increase employee motivation and build successful cultures during difficult times, simple acts of kindness can go a long way to doing both. It makes perfect sense then, that <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2025\/02\/time-for-hr-to-encourage-more-random-acts-of-kindness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HR teams get involved<\/a> and think about how they can raise awareness of the importance of kindness in the workplace.<\/p>\n<h3>How HR can support a kinder workplace<\/h3>\n<p>With the power of kindness a force that businesses can ill-afford to ignore, here\u2019s how HR teams can support it not just during Random Acts of Kindness week, but year-round.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Encourage leaders to lead by example<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the same way that the culture of a business is ultimately dictated by its leaders, the same is entirely true for kindness. As an HR professional, highlight the importance of supporting a kind workplace to your senior leaders, and encourage them to lead by example.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that the senior leaders in your business are the focal point of your company\u2019s culture, and their actions will be both seen and followed by your employees. So, even if they regularly do just simple things such as giving compliments and praising their employee\u2019s efforts, it\u2019s more likely your employees will notice and copy their behaviour \u2013 making kindness the norm, rather than the exception.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be creative when it comes to encouraging kindness<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kind acts come in all shapes and forms \u2013 it doesn\u2019t just have to be grand gestures. Be it donating to a worthy charity, regularly checking in with remote workers, getting a round of hot drinks in when a team is busy, or even just saying thanks to a colleague who\u2019s gone out of their way to help &#8211; there are lots of different demonstrations of kindness.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing for you to remember is that no gesture is too small, and you never know what difference those little actions will be making in people\u2019s lives. So, consider how you could incorporate kindness into your own company\u2019s vision and values, or into your employee reviews. You could even look at using a kindness \u2018initiative\u2019 to support a more formal <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2022\/12\/peer-to-peer-recognition-scheme-guide-hr\/\">peer-to-per recognition scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When your employees know that kindness sits at the heart of a positive culture and is noticed by leaders within the business, it\u2019ll be much easier to create a caring and supportive workplace year-round.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ask your employees how you can build a kinder workplace<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For any workplace initiative to be a success \u2013 even encouraging kindness \u2013 you need to have everyone on board. And, since your employees will be far more likely to get on board with something they really care about, a good idea is to ask them what they think of the company\u2019s culture, and what a kind workplace means to them. You can then act on the feedback you receive, and be seen to have their best interests at heart.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Showcase the little wins and hard work<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s often the case that when things are running smoothly for a business, it\u2019s because your employees will be doing their upmost to ensure that it is. With that in mind, think about how you could acknowledge the work of your people, and show appreciation for everything they do to keep the wheels of business turning.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t necessarily mean a <a href=\"https:\/\/cezannehr.com\/hr-blog\/2022\/09\/successful-cash-bonus-schemes-hr\/\">monetary-based reward<\/a>, either (we\u2019ll come onto that in a moment). A simple company-wide email, a spot during a regular company meeting (either in-person or virtually) or even a social event are excellent opportunities to highlight those who\u2019ve demonstrated kindness.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Consider more formal rewards and recognition<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lastly, if you really want to demonstrate what kindness means to your business, you may want to consider small on-the-spot bonuses, such as a gift voucher for example.
