Memorial day has come and gone, which means summer vacation is just around the corner! But before we start dreaming of a beach vacation, we’re going to have to figure out how much time we’ve managed to accrue—which is much easier said than done.
Calculating time off can be very complicated, especially when it’s divided into vacation days, personal days and sick time, plus public holidays—and the complexity is increased when there are different plans and methods in place for different office locations. Then, add in carry-over time and legal compliance!
This is probably over your HR spreadsheet’s head.
We have encountered so many organizations who are giving their employees too little or too much holiday because of the complexity of these accrual calculations. Your HR system should handle this for you, both for new starters, and on an ongoing basis, year after year.

- Three states and 18 U.S. cities have created laws to give employees paid sick time, but otherwise the United States is the only advanced economy in the world that does not guarantee workers paid time off?
- In the UK, workers are legally entitled to 28 days of PTO (including public holidays). So, if part-time workers don’t work on Mondays (when most public holidays occur), they could easily fall below the pro-rated requirement?
- Microsoft announced that it will now require that any U.S. supplier, with over 50 employees, provides at least 15 days of paid leave per year (for employees doing significant work for Microsoft).
- In Canada, Italy and many other European countries, public holidays differ by region?
